The PowerKan PD4 is a versatile 4 slot smart battery charger designed to handle a wide range of rechargeable cells, from common 18650 and 21700 lithium ion batteries to AA or AAA NiMH and NiCD and 3.2V LiFePO4 cells. Each slot is independent, so you can mix chemistries and sizes at the same time, and the charger automatically recognises most Li ion and NiMH or NiCD packs while allowing manual selection for LiFePO4 and high voltage 3.85V Li ion cells. For RC use this makes it a practical bench or field charger for everything from radio packs to goggles and general purpose 18650 packs.

An intelligent LCD display gives real time feedback for each slot, including battery voltage, charging current, elapsed time, estimated percentage and the total capacity delivered in mAh. You can step through the slots to check individual batteries and use the MODE button to adjust battery type and charge current. Channel 4 adds extra discharge and capacity test functions, so you can run full charge and discharge cycles to see the real capacity of a cell and compare how different packs are ageing over time.

The PD4 runs from a standard USB input and supports both 5V and QC or PD 9V fast charge sources, automatically managing power across its four channels. Charging current can be set to 0.5A, 1A or 2A depending on battery size and the number of slots in use, giving you a sensible balance between charge time and pack life. Built in protection for over charge, over current, over voltage, over temperature, short circuit and reverse polarity, along with a 0V activation function for protected lithium cells, helps keep everyday charging safe and controlled.

Typical uses

  • Charging loose 18650 or 21700 packs used in FPV goggles, field lights and ground equipment
  • Maintaining AA or AAA NiMH receiver packs and general household cells used around the workshop
  • Testing and matching packs using the Channel 4 discharge and capacity test functions
  • Portable charging from a USB power bank or USB mains adaptor at the flying field

PowerKan PD4 Smart Battery Charger FAQ

The PowerKan PD4 supports 1.2V NiMH and Ni-CD cells, 3.2V LiFePO4 cells, and multiple lithium-ion types including 3.6V and 3.7V Li-ion and 3.85V high voltage Li-ion. This means you can charge common AA and AAA NiMH rechargeables as well as 18650, 21700 and other popular cylindrical Li-ion cells on the same charger.
Yes, the PD4 has four independent slots and can charge different chemistries and sizes at the same time. It automatically detects most Li-ion and NiMH/Ni-CD cells and applies suitable charging parameters, although LiFePO4 and some special Li-ion types should be set manually using the MODE button.
The charger is powered via USB and supports both standard 5V input and QC/PD fast charging at 9V. For best performance use a USB power source that can provide at least 5V 3A for normal operation or a QC/PD 9V supply for higher power. You can run it from a USB wall adapter, power bank, computer USB port or similar.
The intelligent LCD display shows real time information for each slot, including battery voltage, selected battery type, charging current, elapsed time, charge percentage and the total capacity that has gone into the cell in mAh. You can cycle through the slots with the SLOT button to check each battery individually.
Channel 4 offers extra functions beyond normal charging. On this slot you can run discharge and capacity test modes, which first fully charge a battery, then discharge it at a fixed current and finally recharge it again. The charger measures how much energy is taken out during the discharge phase and reports the actual capacity so you can compare the health of different cells.
The PD4 includes a 0V activation feature for lithium cells that have a protection board. When it detects a deeply discharged protected Li-ion cell, it will attempt to gently reactivate it and bring it back into a normal voltage range before switching to standard charging. This is intended for protected cells only and is not a guarantee that badly damaged batteries can be recovered.
Each slot can use different charging currents, typically 0.5A, 1A or 2A depending on the battery type and how many slots are in use. You select the current with the MODE button while the relevant slot is highlighted. Lower currents are better for small cells or when you want to maximise cycle life, while higher currents can be used on larger cells when you need faster charging and have a suitable power supply.
The PD4 has multiple built in protection systems including over-charge, over-current, over-voltage, over-temperature, short circuit and reverse polarity protection. It monitors the cells and internal temperature and will stop or adjust charging if it detects unsafe conditions, helping to protect both the charger and your batteries during everyday use.
