8mm balsa sheets are suited to very high load structural parts and solid blocks. They are commonly used for firewalls on smaller electric models, landing gear blocks, strong wing joiners and spars, servo trays, carved blocks, nose blocks and reinforcement where you want a lot of material to shape but still prefer balsa over ply for easier cutting and sanding. This thickness is also useful for building up laminated blocks that can be carved to complex shapes.

This premium balsa wood sheet is precision cut to a standard size of 1000mm x 100mm and comes in a range of thicknesses to suit your needs. Balsa wood is prized for its lightweight, fine straight grain and is easy to work with for both beginners and experienced hobbyists. Commonly used in model aircraft construction, architectural prototypes, and various crafts, balsa wood offers a strong yet light material that is easy to cut, sand, glue, and paint. Its smooth surface allows for clean results and detailed work, making it a versatile choice for a wide range of projects.

Balsa wood is compatible with a variety of adhesives. Both super glue (also known as CA glue) and traditional wood glues bond exceptionally well with balsa, providing strong and reliable joints for assembly and construction.

Balsa Wood FAQ

Each sheet is provided in a size of 1000mm long by 100mm wide, which is a standard size for RC aircraft and model building. The length is ideal for spars, longerons and fuselage sides, and the width works well for sheeting, ribs and general parts without creating a lot of waste.
Balsa wood sheets are commonly used for RC aircraft structures, gliders, scale models, boats and general craft work. Builders use them for wings, fuselages, tail surfaces, formers, spars, sheeting and detail parts, as well as for laminating and reinforcing foam models or other lightweight structures.
Balsa bonds very well with thin and medium CA glue, epoxy and traditional PVA or aliphatic wood glues. Many builders use CA for quick assembly and tack joints, then use epoxy or wood glue for high stress areas like firewalls, landing gear plates and wing joiners. Solvent based contact adhesives can also work if they are safe for wood and the surrounding structure.
Yes. Thinner balsa sheets can be gently bent around a former to create curved leading edges and skins, especially if you lightly mist the wood with water before forming it. Sheets can also be laminated together with wood glue or epoxy to build up custom thicknesses, stronger spars or curved parts while still keeping the structure relatively light.
The best results come from a sharp hobby knife or scalpel and a metal straight edge for straight cuts. Balsa sands very easily with fine sandpaper on a sanding block, which makes it simple to shape and blend parts. You can finish balsa with lightweight fillers, sanding sealer, acrylic paints, film coverings or glass and epoxy, depending on the strength and finish you need.
No. Our current balsa range runs from thin sheeting up to 20mm thick blocks. For parts that need more thickness or strength you can laminate multiple sheets together with wood glue or epoxy, then shape the laminated block to suit your design.
No. All of our balsa sheets are supplied in the standard 1000mm by 100mm size. If you need longer or wider parts you can join sheets edge to edge, laminate pieces together, or scarf joint sections to create the length or width you require. This is a very common technique in balsa model building and works well when done with good joints and proper glue.
